As the world watches in horror as Russia invades Ukraine, it can be hard to know what to say to our kids. In our family, we have reviewed history and tried to understand current events. But something I also like to do in tragic situations is to look for heroes, and in this case, our hero has shown tremendous courage and leadership.
When Afganistan fell to the Taliban, I was disgusted by the actions of the Afgani president, President Ashraf Ghani who fled the country before most of his countrymen, allegedly with four cars and a helicopter full of cash.
In contrast, I am inspired by Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Truthfully, I know very little about him. But this moment is heroic. This video clip is what I will be showing my children today. It is only about a minute long and ends quite abruptly, but the part that inspired me is at the :46 second mark, where he shared his plans about staying in Ukraine or leaving.
Questions to discuss with our children:
- Does courage mean an absence of fear?
- What makes a good leader?
- How to you know when you should stay and when you should leave?
- What is worth fighting for?
- What “dying right” mean?
